The Founder
Jeremy Phillips
30 years building and running IT systems. Started in the 90s with OpenVMS and Unix administration, then moved into Microsoft infrastructure (Exchange Server and Active Directory) and network design and engineering. Owned and operated two ISPs along the way, with co-location infrastructure inside Equinix Ashburn. Ran operations at enterprise scale, environments with over 16 million mailboxes. Did post-merger and acquisition migration work for hundreds of companies, up to and including the Fortune 5. Led teams, managed eight-figure P&Ls, ran technology strategy for growing organizations. Along the way, it became clear that small and mid-sized businesses are what actually runs the American economy — and that they deserve better technology support than they typically get.
Across all of it, the same problem kept showing up: IT that demanded constant attention from people who had better things to do. Reactive fixes. Configuration drift. Vendors who only showed up when something broke.
Athencia was built to solve that. The SMB IT Playbook came out of the same work, a practical guide to getting technology under control and keeping it there.
Right now the focus is on building out Athencia's AI practice. Hands-on work with Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, and Purview for firms that want to use AI without losing control of their data. We're also developing Ask Brogan, an AI operations assistant purpose-built for the way SMBs work, and building workflows around Claude, which has become genuinely useful for Microsoft 365 environments. The same principle as everything else: get the technology right so people can focus on the work that actually matters.
